I’ve got an adaptable crochet button scarf/cowl to share with you today.
It’s getting colder here in the Pacific Northwest, which, to me, means it’s time to start listening to Christmas music (I’ve totally been listening to Christmas music since the beginning of October… shhhhh) and it’s time to work on crocheting warm and cozy accessories.
My most recent crocheted accessory is this adaptable crochet button scarf/cowl that I made with Red Heart’s Hygge Charm yarn in Evening Sky. It’s hard to tell from the pictures, but the yarn has a subtle sparkle throughout. I bought this yarn quite a while ago because I loved the look of the pattern on the skein – the Supersized Chic Cowl.
I’ve been trying to work through some of my stash lately, so when I saw this yarn in my craft room, I decided it was finally time to get started on the cowl. The pattern itself is very easy – it uses a larger hook and half double crochet stitches to make a nice soft and comfy cowl. And the yarn was great to work with – very soft, easy to stitch, and I enjoyed looking at the sparkles!
As I was working on my cowl, though, I decided this would get even more use if I could use it as a cowl sometimes but also use it as a scarf sometimes. Basically, I wanted an adaptable accessory.
So that’s what I made! I decided the easiest way to make an adaptable scarf/cowl was to add buttons to one end and button holes to the other (rather than sewing the ends together).
To start, instead of joining the two ends of the finished scarf together, I added 6 rows of single crochet on one end of the cowl and then I sewed 5 buttons on to that end, evenly spaced apart.
On the other end, I added the button holes. To do this, I first added 3 rows of single crochet. Then I spaced out the button holes to match the spaces where the buttons were located on the other end. Each button hole was made by doing the following: sc each sc until the space for the button hole, then skip two sc in the prior row and chain 2. Then sc in each sc from the prior row until the space for the next button hole – repeat this pattern across. For the next row, I did 2 sc in each sk 2 section and otherwise sc in each sc from the prior row. (If you pick larger or smaller buttons, you may need to adjust the size of the button hole.). I then finished the scarf by doing one more sc row.
Now I have a warm and cozy adaptable crochet scarf/cowl and I can wear it in multiple ways! (And I now want to get this yarn in all of the other colors because the sparkles are so pretty and the yarn is nice and soft!)
