Yesterday, I wrote about my little one who wanted to be the scary dragon for Halloween. Today, I’ve got a “rainbow unicorn” to share with you!
When my other little guy told me he wanted to be a “rainbow unicorn,” I was relieved to find McCall’s M7852.
It’s lame that unicorns are marketed for girls – even the pattern is labeled as a children/women’s pattern, and shows only pictures of females on the envelope. Boys can like unicorns, too!
My guy (who thankfully doesn’t know that society thinks that unicorns should only be for girls) wanted a blue body with a rainbow tail. So that’s what he got!
I used royal blue fleece for the body, light blue fleece for the wings, and light blue felt for the tummy. For the tail and mane, I used different colors of fleece – light blue, yellow, green, orange, red, and purple. For the horn, I used sheer yellow tulle over light blue fleece.
Like with the dragon costume, I used the shape provided by the pattern for the wings, but changed the construction. For these wings, I used light blue felt for the outside of the wings and used thick stabilizer (like that used for making bags) inside to give it structure. Also, instead of stitching the wings on to the costume, I used velcro to attach them.
While my kiddo was running around in the costume, I noticed that it was very difficult for him to keep the hood on because of the weight of the mane. So, I added in a drawstring on the hood to keep it on better.
The pattern was pretty easy to make and the kiddo and I love how it turned out. It is certainly a rainbow unicorn, just as requested!
I can’t wait to see what these two munchkins want to be for Halloween next year!
